School Profile

kakungulu
The school was established in 1945 as a Junior School, on the 80 acre land donated by the late Prince Badru Wasajja Kakungulu, with the major objective of educating Muslim children in order to redress the historical imbalance in Muslim education relative to other religious denominations.
In 1960 Kibuli Junior School was upgraded into secondary school education for both Muslims and non-Muslims. It started as a private school and in 1962 it became Government aided. In 1968 it was upgraded to ‘A’ level status.
From 1968 to 1975 the US through USAID (the 1st and 2nd IDA projects) contributed immensely to the construction of the school’s infrastructure, for instance the Administration block and Laboratories. Other facilities at the school were put up by the Agakhan Foundation, individual members and other parents through the Parents’ and Teachers Association.
Kibuli Secondary School is a co-educational boarding and government aided secondary school. The school motto is “seek knowledge” and the mission is “ to produce a morally educated individual with skills and knowledge for self and national development”With a Vision "To produce a skilled dependable individual" It attracts students not only from Uganda, but even from the neighboring countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Somalia, and Sudan. Currently the school population is 1541 with 4 steams per class from Senior 1 – Senior 4 and two streams for the sciences and one for Arts from S.5 – S.6. The official medium of communication for all classes is English, which is also the official language in Uganda. We offer a very wide curriculum at both 0’ and A’ level, although a lot of emphasis is put on the sciences. The subjects offered are: mathematics, English physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, literature, additional mathematics, technical drawing, wood work, German, Arabic, Luganda, political education, Islamics, Christian religious education, computer, entrepreneurship, fine art, home economics food and nutrition, agriculture and general paper. The first seven subjects are compulsory at 0’ level whereas the rest are optional but at A’ level all are optional. Students offer four (4) principal subjects and general paper as the compulsory subsidiary subject. All our teachers are graduate teachers with more than half the staff with either a master’s degree or already pursuing doctorates in various fields of study. We have a relatively stable staff with a lot of teaching experience ranging from 5 – 20 years with continuous in service/refresher training. Kibuli Secondary School has an excellent record as regards the students’ performance in the external examinations at both 0’ and A’ level, 100% of our 0’ level students join A’ level with excellent results and 100% of our ‘A’ level students pass excellently and continue to universities and other tertiary institutions not only in Uganda but also abroad.

Towards the achievements of the house/class one is in. As a school, we are at present the national champions in football and our girls’ basketball team took the national trophy for keeps. This year, after being champions for three consecutive years. Many of our excellent sports students have been playing in the first league clubs not only in Uganda, but also abroad. In order to address the big inflow expected as a result of the universal secondary school, which is to start in 2007, the school is in dire need of expansion. However, the need to develop is tremendous, for instance, there is an urgent need for a new and bigger girls’ hostel, more laboratory space, a resource center, staff quarters and an administration block with an expanded staff room are so far priority on the list of developments to be taken up in future.
